10 Tips for Pressure-Washing Your Property

By Carl Allan

High-pressure washing is a fantastic way to breathe new life into your property. But do you know how to do it well? I’m an experienced professional who does this for a living, including for commercial cleaning clients in Mackay.

Here is my advice!

#1 Hire Me – A Professional

If you’re unsure about handling a high-pressure washer or if your property requires extensive cleaning, it’s best to hire a professional like me. Professionals have the experience, expertise, and equipment necessary to tackle any pressure washing job efficiently and safely. Plus, they can identify potential issues and address them before they become costly problems.

#2 Start with a Clean Slate

Before firing up your Gerni (pressure-washer), take the time to clear away any obstacles or debris from the area you’ll be cleaning. This includes furniture, potted plants, and loose items that could get in the way or be damaged by the high-pressure water.

#3 Use the Right Nozzle

Different pressure washing tasks require different nozzles. For example, a narrow nozzle provides higher pressure for tough stains, while a wider nozzle covers a larger surface area for general cleaning. To achieve the best results, make sure you select the appropriate nozzle for the job at hand.

#4 Maintain a Safe Distance

Keep a safe distance between the nozzle and the cleaning surface to avoid causing damage or injury. Start with between ½ a metre and 1 metre. Then, adjust as needed to find the optimal balance between cleaning power and safety.

#5 Work in Sections

Rather than tackling your entire property in one go, work in small sections to ensure thorough cleaning and prevent fatigue. This approach also allows you to focus on areas that require extra attention without feeling overwhelmed.

#6 Use Proper Technique

Hold the nozzle at a slight angle to the surface you’re cleaning and move it in a smooth, sweeping motion to prevent streaks or damage. Avoid aiming the nozzle directly at delicate surfaces or joints, as this can cause water penetration or loosening of materials.

#7 Mind Your Surroundings

Be mindful of your surroundings while pressure washing to avoid inadvertently damaging nearby objects or surfaces. To protect delicate plants or sensitive areas from overspray or debris, cover them with plastic sheeting or tarps.

#8 Work from Top to Bottom

Start at the top of your property and work your way down to ensure that any dirt or debris loosened during cleaning doesn’t settle on already cleaned surfaces. This approach also prevents streaking and ensures a more uniform result.

#9 Take Breaks and Stay Hydrated

Pressure washing can be physically demanding, so remember to take regular breaks and stay hydrated, especially as Mackay can be very hot. Listen to your body and stop if you feel tired or overheated to prevent accidents or injuries.

#10 Inspect and Maintain Your Equipment

After each use, inspect your Gerni (high-pressure washer) for any signs of damage or wear and tear. Clean the nozzle and filters regularly to prevent clogs and ensure optimal performance. Proper maintenance will extend the life of your equipment and help you achieve better results with each pressure-washing session.

By following these ten tips, you can pressure wash your property like a pro and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing it sparkle and shine. Whether you choose to hire a professional or tackle the job yourself, remember to prioritise safety and proper technique for the best possible outcome.
